High-purity alumina mid-market driven by rising LED penetration

LED industry recovery to promote the rapid growth of downstream demand. With the recovery of the LED industry, the demand for sapphire substrates is also growing steadily, and the demand for high-purity alumina is expected to grow in the next three years. It is estimated that by 2016, the global demand for sapphire in the LED field will reach 101.93 million mm. In 2017, the overall scale of China's LED industry was 636.8 billion billion yuan, up 21% year on year. Among them, the upstream chip is growing at a high speed, the midstream package is developing steadily, and the downstream application maintains a rapid growth trend. According to the LED Research Institute, the compound growth rate of China's LED industry output value from 2018 to 2020 will reach about 18%, and the scale of China's LED output value will exceed 1 trillion in 2020.
The application proportion of high purity alumina in sapphire is increasing. With the rapid development of the LED industry, the application of high-purity alumina in sapphire crystals has attracted more and more attention, and sapphire crystals have also become the main dosage of high-purity alumina. Sapphire is a widely used and highly industrialized LED chip substrate material. According to the statistics of Yole Developpement, the supply of global sapphire manufacturers for LED epitaxial factories has accounted for more than 92% of the total sales, and with the continuous expansion of the downstream demand of the LED industry chain, the sapphire market has shown a rapid development trend. It is expected that in the next three years, the annual compound growth rate of the LED sapphire market will be as high as 24%, and the market demand for sapphire-grade high-purity alumina is also increasing. At present, from the application classification, sapphire substrate material application is the main application of sapphire. According to Yole statistics in France, sapphire substrate material application accounts for about 75%, and non-substrate material application accounts for about 25%. Among them, the substrate materials are mainly used in semiconductor lighting (LED) substrate materials and SOS-related products, of which LED substrate materials account for more than 95%. Non-substrate materials are mainly used in military and weapon-related applications, and less in consumer electronic terminals.
LED substrate with high purity ultrafine alumina growth space. Judging from the global market, the production of 10000mm 2-inch sapphire crystal rods requires 0.7 tons of high-purity alumina, while the global consumption of high-purity alumina in the LED field will reach 4292 tons in 2013 and 7135 tons in 2016, with an annual compound growth rate of 17%. In the next four years, in view of the overall development trend of the LED industry, according to the average annual compound growth rate of 10%, by 2020, the demand for high-purity ultrafine alumina for LED substrates will be about 10417 tons. From the perspective of the domestic market, in 2013, the global proportion of China's LED wafer production capacity was about 27%, corresponding to the demand for high-purity alumina of 1159 tons. The Electronic Information Department of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology predicts that the output value of the LED industry will maintain an annual growth of 20-30% in the future. Considering the downward trend of LED product prices, it is assumed that the price and end products (such as LED bulb prices) will maintain the same decline (average annual decline of 18%), the domestic production increased by 30-45% per year, by 2016, the domestic LED substrate production will consume more than 3167 tons of high purity alumina. In the next four years, according to the average annual compound growth rate of 20%, by 2020, the domestic demand for high-purity ultrafine alumina for LED substrates will be about 6556 tons.
